Ediciones ARQ is an independent publishing house established by the UC School of Architecture in Santiago, Chile. We publish a triannual academic journal and a robust catalog of books that promote original perspectives on architecture, urban design, landscape architecture, and related disciplines.
History
Ediciones ARQ originated from the publication of ARQ journal, founded in 1980 by Montserrat Palmer along with the Communications team, initially conceived as a journal of record of the UC School of Architecture . Thirteen years after the journal’s creation, the first book by the publishing house was released, initiating a production that now includes over 160 titles dedicated to the design, history, and theory of architecture, landscape architecture, and cities. Ediciones ARQ has been directed by Montserrat Palmer (1980–2010), Patricio Mardones (2011–2015), and Francisco Díaz (2016–2022). Since January 2023, it under the direction of Stephannie Fell.
Objectives
Both the publishing house and the journal have the primary mission of fostering culture and advancing knowledge in architecture, landscape architecture, and urban studies. From our post in South America, we aim to provide a platform where architecture, in all its manifestations—built, represented, written, and exhibited—can be critically examined and meaningfully disseminated.
Today, we fulfill this mission not only through our bilingual publications and our Open Access journal, which broaden the international reach of our work, but also by exploring hybrid formats—digital and print—that allow us to ensure accesibility to most of our titles. With clear language and an emphasis on the graphic design of our publications, we aspire for our editorial output to reach not only professionals but also students and citizens interested in learning more about their surroundings.
By engaging with architecture that pushes the boundaries of knowledge—both within and beyond academic circles—our publications uphold a commitment to intellectual rigor and creative excellence. Whether addressing students, professionals, or curious readers, we seek to bridge the past, present, and future of the discipline with a voice that is clear, compelling, and inclusive.
