In general, the whole world is facing the consequences of an intense rise in urbanization and in speculative urban development, but in the case of tourist destinations these consequences are even more extreme: not only because the environmental resources put at risk are the very reason for these places’ popularity—and therefore their economic and identity value—but also because of the extremely temporary nature of many of the activities that take place in them.
Despite its 5,000 kilometers of coastline, Chile still lacks policies and regulations that can guarantee the development of tourism in relation to local populations and economic activities, such as commerce, fishing, and cultural heritage. The aim of this work is to describe the territory of the central coast through frameworks and parameters that can provide a reference for a better understanding and long-term planning of the area. As architects and planners, we have the opportunity to rethink how architectural, logistical, and cultural infrastructure can respond to the needs and aspirations of both tourists and local populations.
