“The Banal and the Brutal” and “Disappearing Behind the Result”—from their titles alone—reveal Teodoro Fernández’s clear political and procedural stance. In these two interviews, conducted especially for this book, the Chilean architect and National Architecture Prize winner reviews various projects and anecdotes, detailing the formation of his design practices and the considerations he deems fundamental to conceiving architectural projects. The ethical and aesthetic elements in his responses connect his work to a broader context, considering both the architect’s role in public space and teaching. Fernández’s answers outline a moment in Chilean architecture, the relationships between generations of architects at the end of the twentieth century, and emerging challenges for the discipline and the city.
